General description of the collection: The Sam Jones papers consist of an unedited draft copy of his memoir, "To Hell and almost back," written on 4 January 1990. In his memoir, Jones describes his career in the U.S. Army including vivid descriptions of his combat experiences during the Battle for the Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge, from November 1944 to January 1945. In particular, he describes the death of his buddy, Louis Stein, during a Tiger tank attack at a churchyard in early December 1944. Jones describes his wounding, long recovery, and his struggles as a disabled veteran to find a job. He also describes the long-term effects of his experiences during World War II (WWII), and his difficult decision to write about them.

Corporal Sam Jones was drafted into the United States (U.S.) Army Air Corps. After completing Air Corps basic training in Florida, he was assigned to Hammer Field, California to await space at radio school. Jones was unable to attend advanced radio school, and was instead assigned to the 324th Signal Company. He volunteered for and was admitted to the Aviation Cadet Program. When he was half-way through his primary flight training in El Reno, Oklahoma, his program was cancelled on 1 July 1944. J...
